I Should HaveTold Her I Care

By Akinsimoye Samuel Omoniyi

I really wanted to, I tell you I would have,

I mean, I would have,

You see, I should have.

You see reason we lack and starve?

Of love, fun, and fulfilment deprived?

Yea! For we always would’ve done it but never did,

We could have always done what we never did,

We always should have done it but never did,

Sunk in always wanting to do it but never did!

Now, we have become what we wouldn’t have,

Suffering what we shouldn’t have,

Losing what we couldn’t have…

We’re doomed to regret our unexpressed ‘haves’.

For you wanted to say ‘sorry’ but didn’t,

She wanted to say ‘thank you’ but didn’t,

He should have said ‘how’re you?’ but didn’t,

We could have averted his suicide with a visit,

I would have said ‘I love you’ but didn’t…

Seeing our precious loss, we cry out our eyes,

Not for the pains of the loss of lives,

But for the words that shall now in us forever reside,

Fated to haunt us because we would have,

                                           We could have,

                                           We should have.

This morning, I would’ve to her put a call,

Somehow, I forgot.

The news came; she committed suicide with a note dropped:

‘Nobody cares!’

But I should have told her I care.

I really wanted to, I tell you I would have

I mean I should have,

You see, I – I should have.

I didn’t and never would.

I should have told her I cared.
