Surprise
Simon Hinton-Bates
The kids were at school, he was still in the house. He announced, “Popping out for a newspaper.” She watched him disappear from view at the end of the drive. Heart beating, she climbed the stairs to the bedroom, she didn’t have long. He’d be waiting she was sure. Trembling fingers dialled his number, she listened for the phone to ring.
“Hello?” he whispered. “I thought it might be you.”
“Yes, it’s me,” she replied with difficulty, the words catching in her throat. She was nervous and he could tell.
“Do you still want to do this? It’s not too late to change your mind, I’ll understand.”
“I want to. I told you when I saw you yesterday. I’m not going to back out now.”
She’d never done anything like this before.
“Does he suspect anything?”
“No, he mustn’t find out!” She had no idea how he might react.
“If you’re sure you want to go through with this I’ll sort everything.”
“I have to go. He’s coming up the path!”
It was a week later when he arrived home from work to find her standing with him at the front door. The man, ten years his junior was dressed in a smart suit and smiling at her.
“What’s this?” pointing at the new car on the driveway. “What are you two up to?”
“John’s just delivered it; you always wanted a Jag!” She draped her arms around his neck. “Happy birthday!”
