The tree cut down, I set about
Creating the fuel and base;
Where once was void, let there be light -
A hearth in this shadowy place!

My fire was great, yet barely warmed
A soul that was meek and guilty;
Its tongues of destruction cackled at once
For it was you that built me.

Shivering on the trunk, I saw
A figure from the sky;
I closed my eyes, I bared my chest
Prepared myself to die.

Yet death did not come; I held my breath
No vengeance pierced the air;
The sun returned, brought light again,
The voices no longer there.

And in that very moment
I vanished too, without a sound;
My sword, my suit of armour,
Was but a heap upon the ground.

Another traveller came along
A shadow in the sun;
My journey had all but ended twice
Yet his had just begun.

He saw me thus through the branches below
My eyes before my wing;
Then raised that ageless sword of ours
As I began to sing.
